About Dr. Hisla Bates:
Dr. Hisla Bates, MD is a Harvard-trained Pediatric and Adult psychiatrist with over 20 years of experience. In 2016 Dr. Bates was certified in Positive Psychology by the Whole Being Institute with Dr. Tal Ben Shahar. In 2020 she completed a fellowship in Integrative Psychiatry from the Integrative Psychiatry Institute, IPI. Dr. Bates studied with and continues to work with best-selling author and psychologist Dr. Tal Ben Sharar, Ph.D. She uses tools in mindfulness, and the expressive and creative arts when working with children, teens, and adults.
Art and Design
Dr. Bates is a Parsons School of Design graduate with a BFA in fashion design. She is an accomplished artist and printmaker.
Writing and Publications
Dr. Bates is a contributing author in the anthology Alien Nation: 36 True Tales of Immigration, published in October 2021 by HarperVia. She is also a contributing author of Designing and Leading Life-Changing Workshops, published in 2020. She has authored several articles for the Physician Blog, KevinMD, and has been quoted in numerous articles.
Physician Burnout Coaching
Dr. Bates has coached physicians and nurses around burnout, transitioning from careers in medicine, business strategies for side gigs, real estate, and family-related issues. Dr. Bates’ drawing workshops (for non-artists) lower stress and are popular with psychiatrists and therapists. Her workshops have been featured at national conferences in New York, Chicago, and Seattle.

Dr. Bates speaks nationally and internationally on Physician Wellness and has a podcast on the intersection of wellness, art, creativity, and medicine, called Healer Heal Yourself: Reduce Burnout, Discover Your Creativity While You Heal Others.
